Samsung Puts Bixby Speaker Project on Hold – Report

Last month, following the tech frenzy Apple started by announcing the HomePod, Samsung was reported to be planning its own smart speaker. The project, known at the time as “Vega” is to focus on Samsung’s very own personal digital assistant, Bixby. Now, a new report claims the company has had a change of heart regarding the Bixby speaker.

According to a report from The Korea Herald, a source close to Samsung claims the company will put the Bixby Speaker project on hold. The reason for this, according to the source, is the marketability of the product.

In a statement, the source also said that Samsung does not view the market for smart speakers profitable as the market is now dominated by the likes of Amazon and Google. Furthermore, the source also said that Samsung cannot for the time being, gamble on something with a lot of uncertainties. It would rather wait and see what happens to the smart speaker market before deciding to jump in.

Perhaps this decision is a good one on the part of Samsung. For one, there have been many reports that the company is still struggling making the Bixby app work. Right now, the virtual assistant is only available in two major languages: Korean and English. So far, users are still to hear from Samsung about other language version of the Bixby app.

On the other hand, it looks like the Bixby Speaker can be something of a product. The company can offer what the HomePod cannot, including various other smart speaker products like the Amazon Echo and the Google Home.

Whether or not Samsung plans to pursue its smart speaker project in the near future or not, it would be interesting to see what the company can offer. Samsung has been providing consumers with top-of-the-line products for many years now including the Samsung Galaxy line. For more tech updates, be sure to check us out regularly.
