As the 2016 season is coming to an end, MLB trade rumors are hot topics recently. The latest baseball player rumored to make the jump is Detroit Tigers’ J.D. Martinez. Early reports said that Tigers and San Francisco Giants had talks with trading Martinez. But recently, a report hints that Martinez might head to Los Angeles Dodgers instead.
According to ESPN senior writer Buster Olney, Dodgers show their interest in getting Martinez. “The Dodgers have interest in Martinez, but the market of corner outfielders/first-base slugger-types is so deep that’s it hard to imagine L.A. giving up a high-end prospect for Martinez, who will be eligible for free agency after next season,” says Olney in his article.
The 29-year old slugging outfielder has already spent three fruitful seasons with the Tigers. During this period, he batted a .299/.357/.540, 83 home runs and 246 RBIs. Finishing off the 2016 season is his .307/.373/.535 with 22 home runs and 68 RBIs.
Other Possible Destinations for J.D. Martinez
Another ESPN senior writer Jim Bowden says in his article that Martinez is the most likely Tigers player to be traded. And that Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals, and Toronto Blue Jays are also possible teams for Martinez. “Detroit is not going to sign [Martinez] to a long-term extension because of the contract exposures already on their books,” Bowden writes.
Martinez is owed $11.5million for the next season and he will also become a free agent in the next offseason.
Aside from Martinez, other Tigers players are also rumored to be up for trade. Ian Kinsler, Justin Verlander, and Miguel Cabrera are up for trade. But because of the Tigers’ ridiculously high asking price, many are wondering if the Tigers are serious about trading their players.
