It seems choosing your Halloween costumes this year has become a more complicated task now more than ever before. With recent events and unrest, everyone is being urged to think carefully about their Halloween theme.
According to Inquistr, the University of Florida urges students to think first before choosing which Halloween costume to sport. In order to prevent discrimination and bias, the university posted a reminder on their website.
“October brings fall weather and Halloween. If you choose to participate in Halloween activities, we encourage you to think about your choices of costumes and themes,” says the warning. “Some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, cultures, or religions. Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to groups of people.”
Halloween Costumes 2016: Killer Clown Costumes Banned?
Apart from costumes that might raise social insult, it is also wise not to dress up as certain unwelcomed characters. One of such are killer clown purge masks and killer clown costumes.
Because of the recent scares and unrest coming from killer clown sightings, clowns are not the best characters for the occasion. Though it will definitely scare many, it might also prove to be unsafe for you.
Just recently, after months of killer clown scares, people have been reported to fight back. Wearing clown masks even resulted in death and serious injuries for some pranksters.
According to Daily Star, the show Strictly Come Dancing has banned the costume on its Halloween special. BBC opted to disallow the use of the costume as it might be too frightening for audience especially children.
The source of the website shared that “Halloween is a big event in the Strictly calendar but producers have decided to count out clowns this year.There is too much risk of scaring young viewers – especially in light of recent events.”
