The Chinese Have Gone and Cloned Overwatch

Chinese laws don’t really concern themselves with copyright, so if something becomes popular enough – say Overwatch or Team Fortress 2 (remember Final Combat?) – then people over there have no qualms in cloning it in order to benefit at least a little from other’s success. As such, videos of a Chinese Overwatch clone, Legend of Titan, have started to make their way to Youtube.

It’s a pale imitation, but it’s certainly Overwatch.

The trailer features a bunch of heroes, and a map reminiscent of Hanamura. The icons, too. There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of originality here, and not only that, boy does it look bad. Four whole minutes of bad. Either the framerate is 10, or if everything is animated at 10 FPS. Either way, it comes off as just a tad choppy. I imagine that Legend of Titan is still a ways away from being a final product, even if it is a clone, and the video is prototype footage.

Then there’s the title, Legend of Titan. That’s likely a reference to Blizzard’s failed MMO, codenamed Titan. After that ship sank, Blizzard went on to use some of the assets for Overwatch, and then the Chinese developers behind this monstrosity went on to use Overwatch assets for Legend of Titan.

It’s the circle of life, and it moves us all.
