You know how Microsoft has been gradually unifying the Xbox One and Windows 10? More and more games have been making their way from the console to the PC. Well, this week at E3, Microsoft announced that they were taking this a bit further with Xbox Play Anywhere.
Buy a game once, and play it on either the Xbox One or a Windows 10 PC. They did this in a roundabout way with Quantum Break preorders. If you bought that for Xbox One, you got a Windows 10 version for free.
This isn’t a limited thing, either. Seemingly the vast majority of upcoming games will be Xbox Play Anywhere. It’s not just owning two copies of the game across two platforms. The Xbox One and Windows 10 will share saves and achievements. Start a game on the Xbox, then finish it on your PC.
Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, Recore, Sea of Thieves, and Scalebound will all be Xbox Play Anywhere games.
With as gung-ho as Microsoft has been to unify both the Xbox One and Windows 10, this seems like a great way to go about it. I still expect Microsoft will keep a few aces up its sleeve as a way to sell consoles. Obviously Halo comes to mind, but there might be some other first-party games that stay on the console, but only time will tell what those might be.
