Here’s a blast from the past. Sven Co-Op is now free on Steam! What’s Sven Co-op, you may ask? I didn’t know either, which is surprising because I feel like it would’ve been right up my alley. Sven Co-Op is seventeen-year-old mod for the original half-life. Nuts, right? I guess I was too busy playing StarCraft, then Diablo 2, and then WarCraft 3. My youth consists primarily of Blizzard games. I’m cool like that.
The mod is still in active development, or at least active upkeep, and is now on Steam as a standalone download. Free, too, I might add. Previously, you needed to own Half-life to download and run the mod, but that’s not the case anymore. Valve’s kindness knows no bounds. Just don’t expect them to help you via support if you have an issue. I’ve heard horror stories that have left users traumatized and broken, but Steam Support Woes is a topic for another day.
Here’s a run-down of what the mod entails, straight from the horse’s mouth:
Sven Co-op is a co-operative game originally based around Valve Software’s Half-Life. In this game players must work together against computer controlled enemies and solve puzzles as a team.
While Sven Co-op is similar to Half-Life with similar weapons, monsters, and characters, the difficulty has been increased to suit team play.
Sven Co-op’s levels are set as missions and are generally separate from each other. Many missions span several maps and some are collected together in a series. The aim of most levels is to reach the end or to achieve an objective — obtaining a high score is not essential to beat a level, it’s just part of the fun.
I’ve heard it likened to Mario Party. Only with headcrabs.
Feel free to check out Sven Co-Op on Steam.
It’s free after all.
