Call of Duty

Call of Duty Isn’t Going Away

Call of Duty is likely not going anywhere anytime soon. Not that anyone really thought that it would. According to NPD data released today, Black Ops 3 was the best-selling game of 2015, by a wide margin, and also outsold the previous two installments to the franchise. Just when everyone thought that Call of Duty fatigue was a real thing, everyone went and proved everyone wrong. I even bought Black Ops 3. It’s the first Call of Duty I played to any extent since Modern Warfare 2. Sure, mod tools coming to the PC version sometime early this year helped that decision a lot, but the game itself was definitely the best Call of Duty has been in quite some time.

In addition to being the best selling game of 2015, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 helped the franchise surpass 250 million units sold total. So the Juggernaut keeps getting juggernautier.

I guess we still have to wait and see whether Infinity Ward’s installment can carry the momentum through to next year. Since Infinity Word fell apart – and was quickly rebuilt from the ashes – their games haven’t exactly had the pedigree they once had, but maybe this new three-year cycle can do them good.

I guess we’ll find out this fall.
