Xbox 360 Version of GTA V Has Play Disc Install Performance Issues

Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar’s newest installment in the widely popular series, is reported to possess performance issues when optionally installing the “Play” disc of the game along with the game’s required “Install” disc, onto the Xbox 360’s hard drive.  In fact, Rockstar posted a response to a Twitter posting on their Game Support page that stated, “An 8GB install is required. For optimal performance, we recommend not installing the play disc.”

The differences in the game’s graphical performance are obviously noticed, as detailed in a YouTube comparison video created by Eurogamer’s tech analysis team, Digital Foundry.  While playing on the Xbox 360 with the “Play” disc installed, in-game objects and textures are seen materializing with a noticeable delay, subtly affecting the look of the game.  Digital Foundry’s chief reveals that,

Based on what we’re seeing on the Xbox 360 version, perhaps running both DVD and HDD assets from just the one source slows down access times, impacting streaming performance. It’s not game-breaking stuff, but it does take you out of the moment when it does manifest and for that reason we can’t recommend installing the play disc.

However, the tech analysis team later delved further into the issue and discovered that installing the second disc onto a USB flash drive fixes any object or texture rendering issues caused by installing the disc onto the Xbox 360’s hard drive.  Digital Foundry then created another YouTube comparison video, this time with the game’s “Play” disc installed on a USB drive.  Needless to say, the game’s graphical performance greatly improved and removed any noticeable rendering errors.

Grand Theft Auto V was released Tuesday, September 17th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

What do you think of the graphical errors caused by installing the “Play” disc on the Xbox 360’s hard drive?  Leave a comment below and share your thoughts!
