Jagex Issues 13 Layoffs from ‘Transformers Universe’

'Transformers Universe'

UK-based developer Jagex has issued 13 layoffs from the Transformers Universe MMO development team.

Jagex, the UK developer behind RuneScape, has confirmed to Eurogamer that 13 members of its staff behind the development of the browser-based free-to-play MMO Transformers Universe have been laid off.

A Jagex spokesperson has stated to Eurogamer that the loss of staff will not “adversely impact” the development of its free-to-play browser-based MMO, and that the majority of the development team were not affected. The decision of laying of staff was made after reviewing that amount of work left for the project.

“Having reviewed the remaining work required for the upcoming ‘Transformers Universe’ launch we have made the decision to scale the development team back slightly,” Jagex stated to Eurogamer. “We have always been committed to developing the highest quality games and services and are confident that this reduction will not adversely impact the game. The vast majority of the ‘Transformers’ studio will be unaffected by this move. On a positive note a significant portion of the talent potentially effected have already been reallocated to support the upcoming release of ‘RuneScape 3’ in HTML 5 and the ‘RuneScape 3’ on tablets project slated for the end of the year. Regrettably we have not been able to find suitable roles for 13 members of the team who will be leaving the studio later this month.

We will be revealing more details about the game on www.transformersuniverse.com shortly.”

Eurogamer claims that another reason for the layoffs was because of technological changes in the development of the project. It had allegedly been decided that the development studio would be better off with using established technology rather than in-house technology. Fewer staff members were needed because of this change.

However, according to a source that’s “close to the matter“, an insider has voiced concern. The source has claimed that there is surrounding concern over the quality of the game, and that Jagex is in a “precarious position” and it is also being pressured into releasing the Transformers Universe MMO by the end of the year. The source has also claimed worry for remaking Transformers Universe with using unfamiliar technology within six months.
