‘The Witcher 3’ DLC Will be Free on PC and Maybe on Consoles

Marcin Iwinski (the studio head of CD Projekt RED) spoke to Rock, Paper, Shotgun recently, telling them that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will have free DLC on the PC platform. According to Iwinski, the studio is hoping to bring DLC to all platforms – including Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – free of charge. However, even that is CD Projekt’s wish, the decision to allow for DLC on consoles will be up to the platform holders (meaning Microsoft and Sony I assume).

“It’s too early to talk specifics, but definitely all the DLCs and updates will be free,” he told Rock, Paper, Shotgun. “Of course, we’ll see what the platform holders will allow, what we can do for free [on next-gen consoles]. I mean, there are different business models on consoles. From our standpoint, we’ll definitely do everything we can to deliver the same experience across all platforms.”

Iwinski acknowledged that the studio is at odds with Microsoft’s (now defunct) DRM policies for the Xbox One and stressed that bringing The Witcher 3 to the console will be in the gamers’ favour.

“A lot of people on forums are saying, ‘No, but you guys are anti-DRM’,” Iwinski explained. “And we really are anti-DRM. But at the same time, there are people who’ll be fine with [Xbox One’s online-heavy DRM]. They’ll buy the console and just want to play. Why should we not give them this option? That’s our approach, but at the same time, we don’t know what the final policies are. Things might be changing. There’s a lot of heat right now. From our perspective, we’ll always choose the most gamer-friendly solution. And on the platform where we have control, which is PC, we’ll release on GOG day one and DRM-free.”

From my understanding it’s clear that free DLC will be coming to the PC version of The Witcher 3, but free DLC on the consoles is still up to Microsoft and Sony.

The Witcher series has been a series I’ve been wanting to try out for some time now. Sadly, I don’t have a powerful enough PC to run it on full (and that’s how I want to experience it) so I’ll just have to bide my time until the opportunity arises. Then again I could just buy The Witcher 3 for the PS4, but then I would probably miss out on a lot of story-/character-related lore. I think I’ll just wait until I get a proper gaming rig.

What do you think of CD Projekt RED releasing ‘The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’ with no DRM and releasing free DLC across platforms? Let us know in the comments!

  2. no more online restrictions and DRM on Xbox One, CD Project must be thrilled 🙂
