‘The Last of Us’ Grosses More Than ‘Man of Steel’ in Opening Weekend

Still not convinced that videogames are serious force in the entertainment industry? Consider this: Man of Steel, the movie reboot of legendary comic book character Superman, produced by Christopher Nolan the man who directed the Batman reboot and the incredibly popular movie The Dark Knight, was out grossed this past weekend by the recently released Naughty Dog game The Last of Us.

Despite Man of Steel having three times the audience, and The Last of Us being exclusive to the PS3, Naughty Dog’s latest hit according to MCV “comfortably” beat out Superman. This is certainly an impressive feat for the folks over at Naughty Dog.

The Last of Us is a new IP in the crowded zombie/apocalypse genre. Superman is arguably the most popular and beloved comic book character of all time and it’s surprising to see the Man of Steel take a back seat to Joel and Ellie’s adventure even if the victory ends up being short lived in lifetime total-gross. Is this more telling of the rise of videogames or is it just because the new superman flick might be a dud? Leave your opinion in the comments.

  1. You should clarify that the MVC article only claims that the Last Of Us grossed more than Man Of Steel in the UK during it’s opening weekend, not worldwide.
