Borderlands 2 Producer Confirms Level-Cap Increase In The Works

With the recent release of the third downloadable content expansion for Gearbox’s shoot-em-and-loot-em-up Borderlands 2, the game’s associate producer has confirmed that an increase to the game’s level cap is on the way.

Speaking in an article on OPM, James Lopez confirmed that the inevitable increase to the game’s current level cap of 50 will be coming to fans later in Q1. This comes in response to complaints by hardcore fans of the game who expected the increase with the game’s third installment of DLC ‘Sir Hammerlock’s Big Game Hunt’.

The rationale given for the lack of level cap increase with the game’s newest DLC is one that relates to stat tracking. Lopez claims that with the original Borderlands, they were limited to using forum posts and achievements to track the progress but with the sequel they have been able to use SHiFT to “see a lot more about how players are playing the game, and see what they’re doing”. Lopez has said “We wanted to give people enough time to get at least one level 50 in there, and then see from there, how many people are doing this”.

Lopez also confirmed that the planned bump to the level cap (expected by fans to come out around the end of March) “will be for a quite a few levels”, has led to speculation that the update will add far more to the game than initially expected.

By using this data Gearbox are hoping to avoid releasing DLC and level caps “at a time where people are no longer interested”. There have plenty of situations where good DLC has fallen through the cracks of the gaming community as a result of this so while I think Gearbox’s approach is a smart one, I hope they don’t get bogged down in their data that they miss their window.
