Sony has finally revealed their full PlayStation Plus free games lineup for December 2016. And what is Sony giving their loyal subscribers this holiday season? Well it looks like it’s a handful of small titles with only a couple of stand outs.
And it sounds like Sony fans are finally starting to express their disappointment with the PlayStation Plus service.
PlayStation Plus Free Games December 2016
Before anything else, let’s just list down what PlayStation Plus owners will be able to download for free starting December 6.
- Invisible Inc. (PS4)
- Stories: The Path of Destinies (PS4)
- Hyper Void (PS4, PS3, Vita)
- Tiny Troopers Joint Ops (PS4, PS3, Vita)
- Color Guardians (PS4, Vita)
- VVVVVV (Vita)
At a glance it looks like a pretty good haul of free games. But as the saying goes, quality over quantity is much preferred. And based on reviews, it looks like these titles are severely lacking on the former.
Quantity Over Quality?
Out of these six titles, only two stand out as having a Metacritic average greater than 80 — Invisible Inc. and VVVVVV.
Two of the other titles (Stories: The Path of Destinies and Hyper Void) have averages above 70. While the last two just barely break the 60 mark.
There’s a very wide spread with regards to the quality of these free titles, and fans are starting to take notice and express their opinion.
A post on the PS4 subreddit dedicated to discussing the upcoming free games has several comments that basically summarize the month’s giveaways as “trash” (and really that word is putting it lightly compared to the language some comments used).
Redditor ChucksMuscleGut commented:
Oohhh.. another month I won’t even add them to the library. Stop using ps+ games as a selling point. It’s not. Just admit you charge us to use our own p2p connection for multiplayer because you can.
Which echoes the general consensus that ever since PlayStation Plus became a requirement for online play, the quality of free games has severely dropped.
To top it all off, the official video announcing the free games on PlayStation’s YouTube channel currently has a whopping 14,000 dislikes versus only 2000 likes. Once again showing that people are unsastisfied with the selection and the service.
