Whether it be timed events, new game modes, new heroes, or reworks of old ones, the Overwatch team has continuously kept their game updated and feeling fresh.
And that trend continues today as they reveal a brand new map for their game — the jewel of the Arabian Desert known as Oasis.
And PC players are in luck, because they can already try out the new map in the PTR today.
The Newest Overwatch Map: Oasis
Blizzard first announced the new map during BlizzCon of this year, but this is the first time we’re finally seeing it in game.
Blizzard describes the new map on their patch notes for the PTR and details the story behind the new location.
Oasis is one of the world’s most advanced cities, a shining jewel rising from the Arabian Desert. A monument to human ingenuity and invention, researchers and academics from around the region came together to found a city dedicated to scientific progress without restraints. The city and its inhabitants are governed by the Ministries, a collection of brilliant minds who possess many secrets that have attracted the interest of powerful organizations from around the world.
And the description is truly fitting for the new map. It’s a beautiful mix of Arabic architecture that sci-fi aesthetic that Overwatch has at its core.
But beyond just being a new map, Oasis also introduces some interesting new mechanics that weren’t in the game before.
Oasis Gameplay Elements
Gameplay wise, Oasis is a Control map. In these kinds of maps, the two teams attempt to capture the same point for a certain amount of time across three rounds.
Just like all the other Control maps, Oasis is divided into three individual maps that make up the rounds of the game type. The three smaller maps are Gardens, University, and City Center. And it’s in that last map that introduces something new to Overwatch — jump pads.
The City Center map contains a jump pad that significantly boosts any hero’s jumping ability. This opens up that path as a new vertical flanking route that’s usable by heroes other than those with movement skills.
In addition to the jump pads, City Center is also the first map to introduce environmental hazards that isn’t just a pitfall.
The roads of the City Center map will continuously spawn fast moving cars as the match goes on. These vehicles are an instant kill to anyone that’s unfortunate enough to get in their way.
There is currently no announcement for when the new map hits the live servers.
