Nico Rosberg is 2016 Formula 1 World Champion; F1 2016 Final Standings

Nico Rosberg notched up his first Formula One Championship title. He finished second at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this Sunday. This helped him land the top spot in the standings for drivers.

Nico Rosberg finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton by five points and hence won the coveted honor. Bleacher Report states that Hamilton tried his best to keep Rosberg in check. Hamilton even disregarded his team’s instructions for speeding up efforts. He attempted to make Rosberg miss the top-three finish he required for securing this title.

However, Nico Rosberg eventually won the title and Hamilton’s efforts went in vain. Rosberg showcased his excitement on the official Mercedes AMG Twitter account. Sebastian Vettel from Ferrari finished third while Max Verstappen from Red Bull finished fourth in the Grand Prix.

Nico Rosberg should count this as a major feat since his own father Keke won the world championship around 34 years earlier. However, McLaren’s Jenson Button had a poor day at the office. He was forced to retire after a suspension failure occurred at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This took place just 13 laps into the race.

Others In the Top 10

In the drivers’ standings, Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull is at number three while Vettel is fourth. Max Verstappen stands at the fifth position while Kimi Raikkonen takes up number six. Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas take up the seventh and eighth positions respectively. Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso bring up the rear at numbers nine and ten respectively.

Hamilton took a major lead ahead of Rosberg in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix with the Red Bull pair in hot pursuit. Hamilton wished to keep a moderate distance between him and Rosberg. He wanted to retain his own world title.

The New York Times reports how Rosberg talked of “racing him forever” with regard to Lewis Hamilton. When prodded repeatedly by Mercedes engineers to speed up, Hamilton reportedly stated that he was “losing the world championship”.
