It is almost expected that Pope Francis news defy the norm of the Roman Catholic church traditions. And this new information is no different.
The Catholic church still stands firm with its stand that abortion is a grave sin. However, new Pope Francis news reports that the Holy See himself told priests to forgive abortion.
This comes from Pope Francis’ directive last year for priests. For the period of December 8, 2015, to November 20, 2016, which he called the Holy Year of Mercy, priests have been given the ability to absolve sins. In particular, of women who had committed abortion.
Pope Francis News: Abortion Absolution.
Following the end of the validity of this temporary absolution, new Pope Francis news state that he has extended it. Via a lengthy letter posted on Vatican’s site, the Holy See asks that priest forgive women who had an abortion.
He starts the letter addressed to priests and bishops with a story of Jesus’ mercy. “MISERICORDIA ET MISERA is a phrase used by Saint Augustine in recounting the story of Jesus’ meeting with the woman taken in adultery”
The letter shared says, “I can and must state that there is no sin that God’s mercy cannot reach and wipe away when it finds a repentant heart seeking to be reconciled with the Father. May every priest, therefore, be a guide, support and comfort to penitents on this journey of special reconciliation.”
However, he confirms that the church is still not in favor of abortion. “I wish to restate as firmly as I can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life.”
Pope Francis news always comes as a surprise for traditional Catholics. He has opened up closed doors through forgiveness and mercy. Not only has he welcomed divorcees, but also the LGBTQ community to the church.
Most would argue he is one of the most unconventional popes ever seated on the Vatican. He is known for mercy, love and peace. Three traits the Catholic church has always taught but has not practiced much.
A little bit of mercy makes the world less cold and more just.
