Just a few weeks after the US elections 2016, petitions are piling up to re-asses its results. Despite the projected win in the electoral college vote, many are doubting the legitimacy of president-elect Donald Trump’s win.
While there are still a few weeks before the final vote of the electoral college, a petition has circulated to make Hillary Clinton the 45th president of the United States. Known to all is the fact that she has won the popular vote of the people.
Following this petition is another one demanding the polls to be audited. Several claims of the rigged elections are surfacing now. And according to some, it was through the help of Russian hackers.
Hillary Clinton To Be President on December 19?
Following the US elections 2016 results, there have been protests in different states. Some of them were peaceful, others not so much. In addition, many have expressed their disappointment online. Spikes in suicide hotline calls and visits to the Canadian Immigration website were also some of the post-election results.
While Donald Trump might not be the country’s popular vote, the president-elect did win against Hillary Clinton in the electoral college vote. The final count from the projections were 306 votes to 232, Trump to Clinton.
However, the official meeting of the college will still be on December 19. On that date, the representatives can opt to elect the state’s vote or their personal preference. If they choose the latter, where they will be marked as a “faithless” elector, the only fine they will get is a $1,000 penalty.
The country has had several instances of faithless electors in the past. And this can definitely be the case today. Especially since there is immense pressure from the public to oust the current president-elect.
A Change.org petition has been made for that purpose alone, addressing it to the electoral college. Electoral College: Make Hillary Clinton President on December 19 already has almost 5 Million supporters (4,554,496 supporters at the moment to be exact).
“Hillary won the popular vote. The only reason Trump “won” is because of the Electoral College. But the Electoral College can actually give the White House to either candidate. So why not use this most undemocratic of our institutions to ensure a democratic result?”
Did Donald Trump Rig The Ballots?
Another Change.org petition is demanding that an audit should be made for the elections called Demand An Audit Of The 2016 Presidential Election. Despite just having around 100,000 supporters, this claim was made due to speculations that the president-elect had the elections rigged.
In fact, even United States Senator, South Carolina Republican Lindsey Graham has called for a congressional investigation regarding tampering of the elections. In addition, the blame is being pointed to Russian hackers.
Recently, Russia has been openly accused of leaking information to WikiLeaks, of which the website claims to be a false accusation. Furthermore, Russia also condemns the accusations and marks it as baseless.
According to the petition, “The FBI determined some months ago that hacking, originating from Russia, was having an influence on our electoral process. These hackers interfered with our presidential election through attempted and successful penetration of email and voter registration databases, among other systems. This created fear, uncertainty, and doubt about the safety of our electoral processes.”
In addition to the petition, a twitter hashtag has surfaced saying #AuditTheVote. This might be a good idea to keep the unrest on an even level. Since whoever won the election is still most probably the winner, a vote audit will not do any harm.
At the moment, the US elections 2016 results still favor the president-elect Donald Trump.
