Death Note had a cult following after its controversial story. It appears Willem Dafoe will grace the Death Note Movie 2016 adaptation with more twists.
Fans are already aware that the new Netflix adaptation of the hit series will star quite a number of new faces. However, Death Note Movie 2016 will also be graced by the presence of Willem Dafoe. The actor is known for his Academy Award Nominations and portrayals in other films.
According to Mashable, Dafoe will have a rather minimal role in the film. He will not make a direct appearance per se. However, his face will be used as a template for Ryuk’s CGI appearance and his voice.
Given Netflix’s nature, it also appears the film will feature more sex and gore than its Japanese counterparts. This seem very appropriate as Light and Misa Amane’s relationship in the anime is bound to include a sexual component. The mature tone of the film will also set good atmosphere for its philosophical debates.
Other stars of the film will include Nat Wolff as Light Turner (Yagami), Margaret Qualley as Mia Sutton, and Keith Stanfield as L. Paul Nakauchi will serve as the butler Watari, and Shea Whigham will be James Turner.
Roy Lee and Dan Lim (The Ring, Sherlock Holmes) will be producing the film with Jason Hoffs adn Masi Oka. Jonathan Eirich and John Powers Middleton, as well as Miri Yoon and Brendan Ferguson, will be executive producers.
Death Note Movie 2016: The Quest for Godhood
The Death Note franchise started with a critically-acclaimed manga by Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba. It talks of the “adventure” of Light Yagami after discovering a mysterious notebook that kills anyone whose name is written on it. Yagami is a budding law student and is mad at the injustices in the world. He plans on using the notebook to eliminate all criminals in the world. In the process, he will establish himself as a new “god” of justice.
Meanwhile, the young detective L involves himself in the “Kira” murders. He eventually tracks the mysterious murderer in Tokyo and befriends Yagami, the son of one of his partners. They develop an unlikely friendship and rivarly. Deep inside, both of them know the other is suspicious, and so begins the game of cat and mouse.
The excessive amounts of moral questions and debates have spawned a cult following for the franchise. It also led the creation of an anime adaptation, two movies, and another Japanese sequel.
The final release date for the new Netflix Death Note movie is still to be confirmed, but it may appear sometime this year or next year.
