Will there be a Pacquiao vs Mayweather 2 rematch? The Telegraph has reported that this may be a possibility. When Pacquiao regained the welterweight crown against Jessie Vargas, Mayweather was at ringside. This has sparked rumors of a second fight between the two.
The rematch could well mean billions in the final purse. The first match is deemed to be the richest ever in history. Mayweather reportedly earned close to $240 million while Pacquiao topped the scales at $120 million. The entire fight garnered approximately $700 million, breaking all previous records.
Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, feels that Pacquiao vs Mayweather 2 would be even more historic. He has described the first fight as the “biggest in the world”. Bob Arum has also talked of how “it would be a great way for both of them to finish their careers”.
What Pacquiao Said
Pacquiao talked of how he had invited Mayweather for the fight against Vargas. He also cryptically stated “We will see” when asked about a second fight. There were earlier reports of how the Fight of the Century between Pacquiao and Mayweather grossed a colossal amount.
According to MMA Mania, the fight actually grossed $600 million and Mayweather reportedly took home 40% of this figure. Mayweather and Pacquiao’s take-home earnings were around $230 million and $150 million respectively.
There was a guaranteed $100 million purse for the fighters along with $72 million in ticket sales. Additionally, this did not encompass the record of $19 million in closed circuit revenue from commercial establishments, restaurants and bars. There was also another record $6.9 million in closed circuit revenue.
