Scarlett Johansson is a cybernetically-enhanced super soldier in the recent teaser of the Ghost in the Shell movie.
Paramount Pictures also announced that a full trailer will arrive on November 13. The teaser also gives such a preview at the end of the short clip.
Scarlett Johansson, playing lead character Major Makoto Kusanagi, gives a fierce uppercut to an opponent while being invisible. She walks towards the camera after deactivating her thermoptic suit before the date is revealed.
According to Comic Book, the story of the film will be taken from the Ghost in the Shell anime Stand Alone Complex. This is a bold move considering the series is a long 20+ episode hurdle than the original animated film.
Apparently the film follows the Major, who leads the task force Section 9, and her mission to stop a conspiracy that will stop Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
Ghost in the Shell Movie: A Bold Move for Adaptations
The plot of the movie is taken from a short story arc from the anime series. It tackles the Hideo Kuze storyline, where the aforementioned person is part of the Individual Eleven terrorist group. They are fighting against the acceptance of refugees and foreigners into Japan.
Producer Avi Arad explained the stark withdrawal of the movie from an origin story was an honest decision. He believed the time wouldn’t be enough to tell an origin story or include the Puppetmaster from the original animated movie. Interestingly, he wants to tackle the characters emotionally first, given the story is indeed the first ever Ghost in the Shell movie adaptation.
Ghost in the Shell is a popular noir science fiction franchise that spanned at least three movies, two anime series and a manga. The series tackles various issues on transhumanism and morality of artificial intelligence. Its stories on modern world issues from an advanced society’s perspective generated a cult following.
However despite the popularity of the series as a cult classic, some criticize the direction the film has made with its casting. This is particularly directed towards Scarlett Johansson.
The actress has gained critical acclaim in her various roles. However, she jumpstarted into popularity with her inclusion in the Avengers and Marvel Cinematic Universe as the Black Widow. Her compatibility with a spy role may have inspired her inclusion as the Major in the series.
However, fans criticize this selection, citing out that the Major should be Japanese given the story’s rather futuristic and Eastern setting.
Either way, fans will have to judge for themselves when the movie hits theaters on March 31, 2017.
