The appearance of a Supermoon 2016 is not only a spectacle of beauty but some also believe is a sign of the end of the world. After 68 years, scientists confirm that on November 14, the world is about to bare witness to the appearance of the biggest moon after 68 years.
The moon has always been subject to mythology and folklore since the beginning of time. Early ancestors who could not explain the mysterious object defying darkness has associated it with fertility, possession, and the apocalypse.
Most popularly linked to a full moon are werewolves. It is said that the full moon has the power to transform certain people into large wolves. Some depict werewolves as harmful, while others as lone creatures of the night. Another correlation with the moon is lunacy. The word itself from the Latin, Luna which meant the moon and combines together as moon-struck.
November 14’s Supermoon 2016 is the Second Coming?
The occurrence of blood moons, however, poses a terrifying association which is that of an apocalypse, the end of the world, a second coming. Believers are in a semi-panic mode this year because of the frequent appearance of the blood moon.
In just 18 months, the said spectacle appeared four times already. According to Space.com, there has been four consecutive lunar eclipse happening every six months. And the next one will be the Supermoon 2016 which also happens to be a blood moon.
Also known as a perigree, the last appearance of a moon orbiting so close to the earth was in 1982, which Express UK shares is the same year Israel, Christianity’s Holy Land, declared its independence. In addition to the second coming theory on November 14, John Hagee predicted the end of the world after the appearance of four blood moons.
Hagee is the pastor of the megachurch Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. He wrote a book called Four Blood Moons: Something Is About to Change. According to the pastor, the tetrad of blood moons, with one being the Supermoon 2016, signifies doomsday and Jesus’ second coming.
“The coming four blood moons points to a world-shaking event that will happen between April 2014 and October 2015,” the pastor claims. A year later, the world is about to experience the last of the four blood moons.
The pastor has quoted the bible for reference to his claims. First was Joel 2:30-31, “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth: Blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.” Secondly was from the book of Revelations. Revelation 6:12 states that “I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.”
Science Says Supermoon 2016 Not A Sign of the End of the World!
Contrary to Hagee’s claims, Geoff Gaherty writer of Space.com says that the appearance of the Supermoon is simply clockwork and is not out of the normal. Gaherty wrote that “When the mechanisms behind eclipses were less well understood, they were thought to be omens of bad tidings, just as comets were. Now people know that these are just normal events in the clockwork of the solar system, things which have occurred regularly for thousands of years and which will occur for thousands of years into the future.”
While it is well-known that science and mythology has always been in disagreement about the explanation of things, one thing is for certain. November 14 marks the day we will witness the biggest moon after 70 years. It is both exciting and scary but possibly a once in a lifetime event. Mark your calendar and remember to take a peak outside for the appearance of the Supermoon 2016 on November 14.
