Activision recently updated their support page for Call of Duty Infinite Warfare PC version. And we’ve learned some interesting new information regarding the upcoming title. Most noteworthy of them? Seems like players that purchase the game from the Windows Store will not be able to play with other versions of the game.
Call of Duty Infinite Warfare PC Restrictions
To quote the information presented in the support page:
Can I play Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered for Windows 10 on Windows Store with my friends that are playing on another PC platform?
No, you can only play these titles with other users of Windows 10 on Windows Store.
So what exactly does this mean? Well simply put, those who purchase the game from the Windows Store will not be able to play multiplayer with those using a different platform — which most likely refers to Steam.
This will severely limit the number of people Windows Store buyers will be able to play with. Steam is home to over 11 million active users and is the primary platform for many PC players. On the other hand, majority of Windows users have yet to actually upgrade to Windows 10 and therefore don’t have access to the Windows Store to begin with. It’s definitely a strange decision as all it will serve to do is divide the player base.
According to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson commented on the issue. And they had this to say:
“We support cross-play between devices and platforms for partners who want to enable it.”
Therefore putting the blame of the decision entirely on Activision.
Other New Information
This isn’t the only new information to surface, however. The support page update also confirms that Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered will not be part of Microsoft’s “Play Anywhere” campaign. Which isn’t too surprising given that the title has no direct ties to Microsoft, unlike most of the other games in the program.
They’ve also confirmed that Xbox Live Gold will not be required to play the game if purchased from the Windows Store, however a Microsoft account will be required. Lastly, the campaign will be playable offline.
