Take-Two Interactive, the parent company for Rockstar Games, reported that Grand Theft Auto V and GTA 5 Online have sold over 10 million copies this year alone across all platforms. With this number, it has now out sold almost every other new release in 2016.
Grand Theft Auto V and GTA 5 Online’s Continued Growth
With the addition of this year’s sales, GTA 5 has now sold 70 million copies in the three years since its release. This makes it the fourth highest selling game of all time, falling behind Wii Sports, Minecraft, and of course, Tetris.
So why does GTA 5 continue to sell so well? For one thing, it’s still one of the highest rated games in recent history with a Metacritic average of 97 on all consoles and 96 on PC. Critics and fans alike praise pretty much every aspect of the game — the story, the gameplay, the world, and everything in between.
It also helps that Rockstar Games has continued to support GTA 5 Online across the years, having released over 20 different expansion packs since 2013. The latest expansion was Bikers which came out just last October. In addition to that, GTA V is in the top charts for YouTube’s most popular gaming videos falling just behind Minecraft.
Lastly, let’s not forget that besides its original 2013 release for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, GTA V was re-released for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in 2014 as well as the PC in 2015. This definitely had an effect on sales as consumers would purchase a second copy of the game upon upgrading their system.
Take-Two’s Lucrative Year
Other than Rockstar Games, Take-Two Interactive is also the parent company of another major video game developer — 2K Games. And in addition to the revenue generated by GTA V, recent releases by 2K games has given Take-Two a very strong fiscal quarter.
According to their report, the largest contributors for the quarter were NBA 2K17, Grand Theft Auto V and GTA 5 Online, Bioshock: The Collection, and XCOM 2. It goes into further detail with some standout numbers.
NBA 2K17 has sold 4.5 million copies since its release in September. Likewise, the recently released Mafia III shipped 4.5 million copies in its first week, making it the fastest selling game in 2K’s history. The quarter also saw the release of Civilization VI, the latest in the Civilization franchise and has lead to the series selling 37 million units.
All in all, Take-Two saw great success this past quarter. And with the recent announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s likely they will just continue to grow in the coming year.
