A few days before the world premiere of Doctor Strange movie, director Scott Derrickson revealed a spoiler. Although the Marvel movie came out in UK theaters today, the rest of the world has yet to watch in two weeks.
If you are not living in the UK and have not watched Doctor Strange movie yet, then be warned of the spoiler ahead.
In an interview with IGN, the director divulged a shocking news. Benedict Cumberbatch, who played as Doctor Strange also took on the role as Dread Dormammu.
Dormammu is one of the biggest villain in Doctor Strange comics but is not the main villain in the movie. However, it is known that this iconic villain plays an important role in the movie’s climax. It is said that Dormammu will be the main villain in the second Doctor Strange movie.
“The voice was a British actor whose name I don’t know, and Benedict – Benedict did the facial capture for it,” disclosed Derrickson.
A move to postpone casting the role?
Before Josh Brolin was cast as Thanos The Mad Titan in Guardians of the Galaxy, the greatest Marvel villain already made an appearance at the end of Avengers. Thanos in the Avengers was not played by an actor but is just a CG character. IGN then asked if like in Avengers, this move is just a way to postpone casting the role.
Derrickson said that it was not the case. “No, no, it wasn’t that at all. We knew it was an all CG character, but as we were in production Benedict brought it up as an idea. He said ‘What would you think about me doing it?’ I said, ‘Let me think about it, you know.’
“The more I thought about it the more I liked the idea,” said Derrickson. “Because no one understood Dormammu better than Benedict did. I also wrote that role to be a kind of ultra-inflated version of Strange. He is an ego run amok; he is this cosmic conqueror where everything, where literally everything in the multi-verse is about him. There’s something interesting about this confrontation of this little, tiny guy who has this power of time and this monstrous conqueror who is trapped by a clever gambit. There’s something about that worked well, and I didn’t think anybody to interact with Benedict than he, himself.”
There you have it. The Primetime Emmy Award winner will play both the superhero and the villain in the latest Marvel offering. Doctor Strange movie will premiere worldwide in two weeks.
