Seems beauty pageant has already kicked off. While most people know Miss Universe 2016 to be on December, another contest is being held right now and is bringing in people from across the globe to their screens in hopes of another crown. Miss Grand International 2016 is airing right now, but it’s gathering viewers for all the wrong reasons.
Miss Grand International 2016 is not as popular as Miss Universe or Miss World, not even Miss Earth. However, over the past few days it has taken the limelight, not for supporting women but for bashing them.
Miss Grand International 2016 Fat Shaming
Miss Iceland 2016 Arna Ýr Jónsdóttir has quit the beauty pageant in Las Vega after the owners told her she was “too fat” and had to lose weight if she had any plans of winning. Thai TV presenter, Nawat Itsaragrisil, apparently wanted the pageant contestant to skip meals to shed pounds, guised as good fate for Arna who was a favorite of the owner.
“Stop eating breakfast, eat just salad for lunch and drink water every evening until the contest. [The owner] is telling you this because he likes you and wants you to do well in this contest,” a message from the Miss Grand International 2016 told Miss Iceland, notes the Daily Beast.
In response to the fat-shaming, Jónsdóttir dropped out of the competition.
“If the owner of the contest really wants me to lose weight and doesn’t like me the way I am, then he doesn’t deserve to have me… Yes, my shoulders are a bit broader than the other girls, but that is because I was a member of the Icelandic national athletics team and I am proud of that.”
Moreover, an update on Iceland Monitor added that Arna was forced by the organizers to retract her comments. In a Facebook post, Arna said that she will be standing up for herself and that her physique does not dictate whether she could be a beauty queen or not.
“I intend to stand up for myself, women everywhere and the Icelandic people. I will not let them tell me I am too fat to look good on stage. I have quit. I will not be taking part in Miss Grand International,” Arna explained.
With how Miss Iceland responded to the fat-shaming, she is now the true Miss Grand International 2016.
