The NBA 2016 season is set to kickoff in less than a week but teams are still trying to figure out their rosters. One big NBA news hitting the web now is the Spurs trade between LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMarcus Cousins.
The Spurs have always been a championship contending team, having made it to 19 straight NBA Playoffs appearances. While the team has won it’s fifth championship in 2014, it has failed to make it to the Finals in two consecutive seasons.
After failing in 2015, the team signed the services of All Star power forward, LaMarcus Aldridge. It was one of the most talked about acquisitions in the league, and fans were hopeful that the Aldridge would be the missing link to another championship run. But the 2016 NBA Finals found the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors back at it again, with Spurs bowing out of the Semifinals against the Oklahoma City Thunders.
Now, with just a few days away from the 2016-2017 NBA regular season, NBA News reports suggest that the San Antonio Spurs are looking to revamp its lineup again by trading Aldridge. For whom? Likely for DeMarcus Cousins.
Spurs Trade LaMarcus Aldridge?
Reports have been flying for the past days that the Gregg Poppovich-led team is open to trading the former number two draft pick should the right offer appears.
According to Jackie MacMullan, the Spurs-Aldridge relationship didn’t turn out to be what everyone has expected. During an appearance on CSN’s Early Edition, the analyst revealed:
“No. Not after what I heard the other day I don’t. Of course, you would take him on if you could because he’s an automatic double-double. But there’s just some things about him. There is some stuff going on maybe.”
My San Antonio also noted that the former Trail Blazer isn’t happy with how things are being dealt with in Texas. Aldridge was promised to be the focus of the team’s offense, but it hasn’t been the case last season.
“The belief is the Spurs pitched him on becoming the center of their offense when they recruited him in 2015, and that hasn’t occurred with the rise of Kawhi Leonard. However, a team source said there are currently no problems with Aldridge, adding he is apart of the Spurs’ future.”
Should the reports be true, then the Spurs trade for Aldridge will leave the power forward spot empty in San Antonio. Especially with the retirement of Tim Duncan.
Many suggest DeMarcus Cousins to be the best fit for the Spurs.
DeMarcus Cousins Trade
For the past seasons, it has been quite obvious that Cousins isn’t happy with how things are turning out in Sacramento. Talks about a clash between former coach George Karl and the center have gone on the entire season. And although SAC has already replaced Karl with Dave Joerger, it seems Cousins is still not content with the Kings.

With all these reports, a Cousins move to Spurs would be a clear option for the team. However, nothing has been confirmed. The 2015 fifth pick averaged 26.9 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per games last season — some pretty impressive stats.
Should the Spurs trade push through, Cousin might just be the one to replace big ol’ Timmy in Texas.
