Star Wars Rebels season 3 returns tonight and we have the lowdown on the best episode 1 premiere preview and spoilers!
The animated TV series produced by LucasFilm Animation returns tonight on Disney XD, and fans should know that a new character is making his debut in the series, Grand Admiral Thrawn. The villain is best known as an imperial commander from the expanded universe, Star Wars Legends. He has faced off Star Wars characters Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. However, since Disney took over the franchise, the storyline of Admiral Thrawn, together with other Star Wars expanded universe have been discontinued. All being considered a non canon.
Grand Admiral Thrawn History & Star Wars Rebels Return
Thrawn was introduced in the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. The books was the first in the Thrawn trilogy, and was also the first ever series to take place after the Return of the Jedi.
A member of the Chiss species and a tactical genius, Thrawn aimed to take charge of the empire
“Thrawn’s plan? To return the Empire to power,” Den of Geek explained.
“As one of the few high-ranking Imperials left alive after the Battle of Endor, Thrawn was poised to take charge…Thrawn was recruited by Emperor Palpatine for the Empire, where he battled xenophobia on his way to the top. Thrawn’s full name is Mitth’raw’nuruodo, but it was shortened for both the Empire and, presumably, the reader.”
His stories have since been exiled from the Star Wars universe, having been considered non-canon. This is primarily the reason why the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn is a big deal for Star Wars 2016 fans.
Thrawn will be joining Star Wars Rebels season 3 episode 1 as the villain to main character Ezra. He aims to defeat the Ghost crew and takeover power.
Ezra and the Sith Holocron
Fans will surprised to see how well developed Ezra’s skills are already. A new trailer Star Wars Rebels Season 3 episode 1 shows his incredible abilities with combat and using his lightsaber.
Taking off some six months after season 2, Ezra’s new abilities could very well be because of the Sith Holocron — which may not be the best idea for the hero.
“I think that’s the allure of the Dark Side is that you’re gonna be given a lot of these abilities with much quicker returns. And so that’s deceptive. You think oh I’m getting more powerful, you don’t realize you’re kind of getting enslaved to that power and that idea of power and control,” Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni told SlashFilm.
“You get this feeling that he’s using it for good, you know. But that doesn’t always work out in the end.”
While Ezra may be in danger of falling into the dark side, it might also be what he needs to defeat Grand Admiral Thrawn. The new season definitely has a lot in store for fans.
Star Wars Rebels season 3 episode 1 airs tonight, Sept 24, 8:30pm ET on Disney XD.
