Rocky 40th Anniversary

Rocky was released on November 1976. Written by Stallone himself, the sports drama propelled Sylvester to superstar level. Allegedly inspired by the Muhammed Ali-Chuck Wepner fight, the actor worked for three straight days to finish his script. Stallone would later star as lead role, Rocky Balboa.

The movie was released on November 21, 1976 and was also widely received by fans and movie critics. With a mere budget of a little over $1 million, the movie has earned more than $220 million worldwide. Rocky was also nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Stallone receiving Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay nominations. It went on to win Best Picture, Best Director and Best Film Editing.

The boxing film series went on to create six more Rocky movies, including the 2015 hit Creed.
