Nostalrius Meeting With Blizzard to Talk About, Among Other Things, the Weather

The Nostalrius saga continues. The team behind the now-defunct vanilla WoW private server will be meeting with those who threatened to sue them, according to a tweet from Nostalrius.

They claim that an announcement will be coming this weekend, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up. Not that it hurts to hope. Hope all you want. Just don’t expect to come out of this weekend with news that Blizzard has hired the Nostalrius team to helm their vanilla server efforts. It’s more likely that the announcement in question will be pertaining to the legal battle. I imagine that with all the controversy, Blizzard doesn’t want to follow through with the lawsuit if they can help it. Too much bad press.

They’ll probably talk it over behind closed doors over the next couple days, and then announce that Blizzard and Nostalrius has come to a amicable agreement, and that they’ve chosen a new Pope. Maybe they’ll even shake hands, and hug, and get to mess around with the Legion alpha, and the Nostalrius people will bite their tongue on how inferior it is compared to vanilla World of Warcraft.

Who knows, though. Maybe I should be an optimist. Maybe everyone will get what they want. Blizzard will get to prevent any more infringing on their intellectual property – for the time being. Nostalrius won’t have to mortgage their homes in order to pay big fat lawyer bills, and the WoW community will get the vanilla servers they oh so want. Only then they’ll discover that most of what’s dear to them about vanilla WoW is purely nostalgia, and they’ll never hit 60 on the vanilla servers let alone raid Molten Core, Blackwing Lair, Ahn’Quiraj, and Naxxramas. 40 people is a lot after all.

Don’t get me wrong, I definitely hope that Blizzard creates vanilla servers. It won’t hurt to have them exist, and I’m sure there are plenty of people who will find a home there, and it’ll give a chance for people who never experienced vanilla WoW to see what all the fuss was about. Eventually, I’d even like to see a server for each of WoW’s expansions. You’ve got the Burning Crusade server, the Wrath of the Lich King Server, so on and so forth. Because why not?

Don’t expect any of that to come out of this meeting, though.

About Josh Price

Josh Price is a writer who probably spends too many hours of the day playing video games. At some point he decided to put the two together to (hopefully) great effect. He also wrote some fiction. You should check that out if you're into such things, which you should be. Reading is FUNdamental.

This is a great idea, vanilla servers. I started playing during MoP, but I have to agree with a lot of the criticisms about Wow – garrisons, etc and don’t play much anymore. I never played the earlier dungeons and scaling levels or vanilla servers would definitely get me back into the game.
