And how did Nintendo unveil such a big announcement, the release date of their latest video game console? Did they release a Youtube video with Reggie doing Reggie things. Did they showcase the new Zelda game and then morph it to show how sexy it’ll look on the NX? Nope – they didn’t do any of the above.
Nintendo buried the date within their most recent financial statement, but I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised. This is Nintendo, after all. They march to the beat of their own drum. Always have – always will, and release dates being revealed within financial statements is nothing new. Earlier this year EA let slip the release windows of a few of their games, notably Mass Effect: Andromeda and Titanfall 2. Both those games should be arriving early 2017.
The release of the NX wasn’t the only tidbit of information revealed today. Nintendo of America tweeted that the new Zelda would be the focus of E3 2016:
Nintendo of Japan went on to clarify (in Japanese, of course) that Zelda would be the showcase of E3 this year. The NX would not be revealed. They’ll probably save that for their own conference later this year.
The important bit is this:
- E3: Nintendo changes its approach to the show every year. This June, Nintendo will focus its attentions on the upcoming game in The Legend of Zelda series. The Wii U version of the game will be playable for the first time on the E3 show floor, and it will be the only playable game Nintendo presents at the show, in order to provide attendees a complete immersion. Additional information about Nintendo’s E3 plans will be announced in the future.
So we won’t be seeing the Legend of Zelda running on NX hardware, just Wii U. We’ll have to wait until farther into the year to see how much better it looks and runs on the new hardware. It’s also super interesting to see Nintendo focusing solely on one game at this year’s E3, but I guess there’s no better game than Zelda for them to take such a stance with, especially one that’s been anticipated as much as this one.
So yeah, that’s the day’s NX news. Later on we’ll return to our regularly scheduled rumor bonanza on specs and such. It’s nice to finally having some concrete information about the elusive console. Seems like rumors have been coming almost weekly for the past six months.
