After 13 years, GameTrailers is going offline. The site was once the go-to place for seeing all the latest video game trailers, and later they were a exceedingly reliable source of reviews and gameplay videos. Just last year I watched countless hours of their E3 content, and was looking forward to that again this year.
They were one of the first sites dedicated to video content. Something the rest of the internet is only just now getting that memo. Everywhere you look, video game content is predominately video content. Youtube, and Twitch, and the countless review sites that post videos alongside their written reviews.
And after today there will be one less of those sites. GameTrailers announced the news on their official Facebook page. As sudden as this might seem to many of us, it seemed that it was even more sudden for the staff, as Associate Editor, Ben Moore, stated on Neogaf.
Hi everyone, Ben here. I just wanted to confirm that GameTrailers is shutting down officially today. Everyone is being let go. We all found out mere hours ago, so we’re still reeling a bit. Sincerely, thank you all for the tremendous support.
GameTrailers was bought out by Defy Media in 2014, so perhaps you could wager that this was only a matter of time. Games journalism is a pretty tough industry, both to get into, and to stay afloat in.
Let’s just hope that everyone at GameTrailers can land on their feet.
