On Sept. 17 Electronic Arts Inc. and 10 National Red Cross Societies announced a collaboration to allow SimCity players to help real-world people.
Players will be helping these people out, and helping their city out, with EA’s new Red Cross DLC. Buyers will find a shiny new Red Cross Center, tents, and two vehicles at their disposal. When a natural disaster inevitably strikes their cities, Sims that would have been critically wounded will be sent to relief tents instead.
For the next year the DLC pack will be retailing for $9.99 on EA’s DRM client, Origin. EA has agreed to donate 80% of their proceeds to participating Red Cross National Societies with a minimum of $100,000.
“This creative partnership with SimCity will help us reach a new audience and raise awareness of the work of the Red Cross during real world disasters, said Mark Astarita, Director of Fundraising at the British Red Cross “This will bring the Red Cross to life for gamers in an exciting and interactive way while raising vital funds to support our work helping people in crisis in the UK and overseas.”
With the Red Cross pack in the hopper, and the success of SimCity’s Nissan Leaf DLC, it will be interesting to see which way EA extends its progressive reach next.
