Minecraft Coming to the PlayStation Console Family
At Gamescom 2013 on August 20th, Sony officially announced that Minecraft would be released as a launch title for the PlayStation 4. The popular sandbox game made by Mojang studios will also be released on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita as well. Markus “Notch” Persson, the owner of Mojang, also confirmed this news on August 20th via two simple Twitter posts, which read, “Minecraft+Sony=true” and, “PS4, PS3 and Vita”.
Fans of both Mojang and Minecraft first learned of Minecraft’s possible release for PlayStation consoles through a discussion between Jens Bergensten and iGamer in March of 2013. Bergensten, the lead developer of Minecraft and Minecraft: Pocket Edition, stated that,
Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.
Needless to say, the game’s PS4 release officially confirms that Minecraft will no longer be a Microsoft-exclusive title as it was thought to be when released for the Xbox 360. The game, however, will also be released for the Xbox One, ensuring that gamers who own either a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One will be able to enjoy Minecraft on a next-gen platform.
Furthermore, being that the game is a PlayStation 4 launch title, Minecraft will be released for the PS4 on November 15th.
Would you purchase a PlayStation version of Minecraft? What do you think about Minecraft becoming a non-exclusive title?
