The popular Space Hulk board game is coming to Steam!
Imagine the surprise and childish glee on my face and the internal screaming when I saw this suddenly appear on Steam. Space Hulk, after being announced by Games Workshop back in late 2012, has finally made its way onto Mac PC, with an appearance coming to iOS later on – specifically the iPad.
For those who don’t know, Space Hulk is the first videogame of its name since the original one was published by EA back in 1993, and it takes place in the same universe as Game Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game.
Aside from its 1993 release and subsequent future ports to different platforms (and a few inspired iterations), Space Hulk derived from the board game of the same name. In Space Hulk (the board game) you and another player took control of either the Space Marine Terminators, one of the Emperor’s most finest, or the Genestealers, a wretched subspecies of the galactic mega-organism known as the Tyranid, and together you take it in turns to essentially search and destroy each other.
With that brief history lesson out of the way, Space Hulk also has cross-platform functionality, meaning players will be able to play online against each other regardless of the platform they happen to be using. It is boasted its Steam page that the multiplayer of Space Hulk recreates the board game experience. The singleplayer, however, is based off of “Sin of Damnation” Space Hulk campaign, which includes 12 missions and three brand new prequel missions.
“We’ve been sweating away on ‘Space Hulk’ for several months and are excited to finally unleash our take of this classic, iconic franchise, that perfectly recreates the classic claustrophobic board game experience for single and multiplayer play”, said Thomas Hentschel Lund, CEO of Full Control. “As enormous fans of the franchise, we know that this game will drive home with the players and are excited to finally let battle commence”.
This highly anticipated turn-based strategy game is now available for pre-purchase on Steam, and it is due for release on August 15. Pre-purchasing Space Hulk will give you access to two limited edition DLC exclusives: a personal banner pole for multiplayer action and a Genestealer skin for single player combat. Both are only cosmetic items.
The banner is something you can wear whilst in multiplayer, if you happen to play as the Space Marine Terminators. The Genestealer skin can be used in singleplayer when you are playing as the Genestealers. It is not stated whether either DLC can be equipped in both singleplayer and multiplayer.
