The Elder Scrolls Online Offers Unique Solo and Group Dungeon Experiences
Ever since its announcement, Elder Scrolls Online has left me a little nervous. Everything about Tamriel should work within the standard MMO format, rich history, interesting world, plenty of races. Yet, what worries me is, will it still feel like Elder Scrolls?
Despite showing off the first person combat recently, there hasn’t been much talk of how they plan to incorporate the tropes of the series. Whenever I think of Elder Scrolls, I picture a long, dark cave system. A sword in one hand, a torch in the other. I picture it as a solo experience. Does this mean that they will offer up solo dungeon crawling content as well? For those stubborn Elder Scrolls fans like me.
In the ESO blog, they recently responded to that very question. “The Elder Scrolls Online is set up to be a fluid experience. As you wander the landscape you’ll encounter caves, forts, tombs, dungeons, and etc. Certain rare locales will just be for solo players, and some dungeons are meant for groups made only of people you choose to go in with. Most locales, however, will be accessible by everyone.”
They also outlined how leveling can impact your preparedness for these instances; “Some might be too dangerous for you because of your current level, but you can always come back when you are more powerful if you want to complete them solo. We recommend grabbing a friend or grouping up with a stranger if it seems too tough, though, because that’s all part of the fun.”
There’s also mention of dungeons containing “branching paths“, waypoints being within dungeons, allowing you to resurrect without being forced to leave your group.
It all sounds very interesting. Maybe it’s time I stopped going it solo and took to the dungeons of Tamriel, friends in tow.
