During E3 – just over a week ago – the teaser for EA’s new Star Wars title Star Wars: Battlefront was revealed. You may remember a few months ago when Disney announced that they chose EA to “create new ‘Star Wars’ experiences for gamers worldwide,” and that the two of them had arranged an exclusive multi-year exclusive licensing deal.
Well it seems that the Star Wars: Battlefront teaser was the first fruitful confirmation that the Star Wars franchise still has a beating heart.
Taking this development head on is Swedish development studio DICE, notably famous for their Battlefield series. Despite the alleged controversy of whether or not it’ll be DICE HQ or DICE LA who will be behind the development, Patrick Söderlund (executive vice president of the EA Games Label) clarified that it will be DICE HQ who will develop Battlefront and DICE LA will be supporting them.
This new iteration of the Battlefront series will use DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine.
I don’t know what platforms this title will be coming to. A post on Star Wars Blog states that “platform and release information will be revealed at a later date,” but a post on Eurogamer states that the title will be multi-platformed (PC, PS4, Xbox One). Take whichever with a pinch of salt just in case, I would suggest.
If you’re wondering if Battlefront will just be Battlefield: Star Wars Edition then allow me to clarify. Battlefield’s Executive Producer Patrick Bach told IGN that Battlefront won’t be Battlefield: Star Wars Edition.
“We don’t want Star Wars plus Battlefield,” said Bach, “because that would be boring, right?
In general, we wouldn’t build a game that is a copy of someone else’s game. We couldn’t do that. We’re too stubborn and too annoying for people to think we could do that.”
I’m certainly hoping this new iteration of Battlefield will do the series justice. I have no doubt that DICE will do a good job of its multiplayer, but I’m more wary of how the main campaign will turn out. Having said that it is still far too early in the game for me to speculate such things.
Nonetheless it is still good news to hear that there is a known Star Wars title in development.
