Nintendo Not Holding a Large-Scale Press Conference at E3 This Year

Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have traditionally held big press conferences at E3, the biggest video game show of the year. However this year, Nintendo is breaking from tradition and will not hold the large presentation that gamers have become accustomed to.

Instead, Nintendo is planning on having smaller more focused presentations.   “First, we decided not to host a large-scale presentation targeted at everyone in the international audience where we announce new information as we did in the past.Instead, at the E3 show this year, we are planning to host a few smaller events that are specifically focused on our software lineup for the U.S. market. There will be one closed event for American distributors, and we will hold another closed hands-on experience event, for mainly the Western gaming media.” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

This is definitely a surprise and perhaps a disappointment for Nintendo fans which have come to expect a grandiose event on the biggest stage. However, considering what Nintendo is up against this year it may make some sense.

Nintendo’s next generation offerings, the Wii U and 3DS, have already been released and much of the upcoming software for both has been revealed through Nintendo’s periodic Nintendo Direct shows. Without any new hardware, it will be very difficult for Nintendo to steal the show from both Microsoft and Sony, who will each be showing off their next gen hardware.

This is likely Nintendo’s way to preemptively generate some buzz and then take a backseat this year at E3, while Microsoft and Sony battle it out.  E3 will take place June 11-13, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.  For Iwata’s full comments check the source link below.
