THQ’s Last IP Auction Scheduled for May
Well, this is a sad reminder. THQ, one of my beloved video game publishers, is finally auctioning off the last of its intellectual properties, which is to be sometime during May.
A couple of months ago – back in January – THQ’s assets were successfully sold to bigwig buyers; Sega, Take-Two, Ubisoft, Crytek and Koch Media. This meant (amongst development studios, staff and so on) that game titles would be up for grabs to the highest bidder.
Now, the remainder of THQ’s assets that weren’t sold off in the first auction are destined to find new homes by the end of May, probably. The titles that are on offer includes Darksiders, Red Faction, Homeworld, MX, Bigger Beach Sports, Destroy All Humans!, Summoner, and more – as what was detailed on Develop. Apparently, THQ has said the company has received quite a large number of parties interested in those titles.
Initial bids will have to be submitted from buyers by April 1st, with the deadline for final bids on April 15th. During those two weeks of bidding, THQ will be determining the “best and highest bid” for each asset, as well as designate any back-up bids to those assets (from what I understand), and then present the sales to court in May for their final approval.
Here’s hoping that the assets go off to nice, warm new homes, where they will be loved and cared for. It’s saddening to know that all this is happening, but it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world for those assets: change can be good, and with new minds behind those IPs, perhaps something special might happen.
May the best bidder win, and hopefully THQ will send off their assets to the best capable buyer — for the good of the assets themselves. We’ll see what happens in the coming months.
Chirp to Develop.
