With the introduction of the new R18+ rating for games in Australia earlier this month, Valve is already considering submitting their cooperative zombie survival game Left 4 Dead 2.

Posts on the official Valve forums by Chet Faliszek indicate that Valve has “been exploring the options here” and that releasing an original uncensored version of the game for Australian gamers is “something we want to do”. Faliszek claims there is “no need to flood us with emails” and that they “will have more information on this when we understand the issues fully”.

When Left 4 Dead 2 was originally released almost four years ago, it was refused classification and banned from sale due to its “unrelenting violence”. Valve responded to this by submitting an altered version of the game that removed decapitation and limb dismemberment from the game. Additionally, the censored version also caused the bodies of the infected to disappear seconds after you kill them and removed the ability to light zombies on fire with molotovs and other incendiary weapons. Overall the classified version of Left 4 Dead 2 broke the player’s immersion in the game and removed the visceral feel that the series has and hurt the Australian community around the series.

As an Australian gamer who loved the original Left 4 Dead and hated the edited version of the game we got as a sequel, I’m hopeful that Valve can find their way around the legalities of resubmitting the game. With any luck, Australian gamers will soon finally get their hands on the definitive version of Valve’s cooperative zombie slaying masterpiece.

I really hope this happens soon, I have had L4D2 since about a month after release and have hardly played it because there is no immersion… it just isnt fun.
